Am I covered if my bags are lost by the airline?

Yes, if your personal baggage is permanently lost by the carrier, you can make a claim for your belongings that were in the lost bags and the bag itself, with some exceptions.

As we’ve recently changed our insurer, please select the date you bought your policy for more information:

Policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

Policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

For policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018, your World Nomads policy is backed by certain underwriters at Lloyd's:

Yes, if your personal baggage is permanently lost by the carrier, you can make a claim for your belongings that were in the lost bags and the bag itself (with some exceptions – see ‘What’s not covered’ below)

How much can I claim?

This depends on what plan you buy (Standard or Explorer), how many travellers are listed on your policy and your country of residence.

Plan

UK (per person)

IRELAND (per person)

Standard

£125 per item, total claim £1,000

€150 per item, total claim €1,250

Explorer

£250 per item,  total claim  £2,000

€300 per item, total claim €2,500

The policy excess is applied to lost baggage claims.

What you need to do if your baggage has been permanently lost:

  • Notify the carrier immediately and obtain a written Property Irregularity Report (PIR). If you can’t obtain a PIR immediately, then you must follow up within 7 days in writing to obtain this document.

  • Keep any luggage checks and air tickets to support your claim.

  • Provide evidence of proof of ownership and value for your personal baggage. Note that you must supply an original receipt, valuation report or other acceptable proof of ownership and value to support your claim.

  • Have you already made a claim for delayed baggage while you were waiting optimistically for your lost bags to arrive? If so, just be aware that any amount paid out will be deducted from the final claim settlement of your lost baggage claim.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the policy wording so there are no surprises if you do need to use it, particularly Specific Exclusions under Section 4 and the General Exclusions of the policy.

The loss to valuables and any specified items are not covered if left in checked–in baggage or if left unattended at any time (including in the custody of carriers).

For policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018, your World Nomads policy is backed by Millstream:
