Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?

Who pays depends on what’s happened!

If it’s an emergency situation where hospital admission and/or medical evacuation is required, we'll cover these costs upfront (provided the incident is covered as per the policy wording, of course).

You, a member of your travelling party, a friend or a close relative must contact our emergency assistance team as soon as possible to confirm cover, manage costs and any potential claim if you:

  • have been admitted to hospital as an in-patient;
  • get medical treatment or need ongoing treatment, where the cost of treatment is likely to exceed €625;
  • are injured, are hospitalised or suffer psychological trauma in an assault; or
  • need emergency transport, medical repatriation or a medical escort.

If it's not an emergency and the costs are less than €625 e.g. you see the doctor at the local medical centre, then you would pay upfront and make a claim online once all treatment is complete.
